Why is going into teaching a "failure"? Just because few get rich doing it??

  2. jk rowling said, as a part of a harvard commencement speech: "there is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction: the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you."

hearing your story definitely makes me feel like rowling oversimplified. parents aren't just strangers whose judgment we can ignore. what they think, and what they expect of us, matters.

my immigrant parents are practical. they had to be, in order for me to have the choices i have before me today. while they have provided so well and so much for me, it is the same outlook that they insist for me to have. "stick to what's safe, what can guarantee food on the table."

they cannot understand the idea that some of us are quite happy seeking out the things we want, even if the chance of failure is more likely than a Science Major. failure, being a good thing, is another subject rowling touched on.

you can find it on youtube. i'm having trouble pasting links to this comment window.
